We're developing 3D animated episodes centered around a Deaf character, Mavo, in a fantastical world, through motion capture technology to create natural, high quality signing characters. This is the first signing episodes for children's media.
Marina Martins and Melissa Malzkuhn met in 2015 and the rest is history in the making. Both are alike, creative-minded visionaries who wanted to bring new possibilities in storytelling for young children.
Marina founded Pigmental Studios to tell great stories through animation. Melissa founded Motion Light Lab to tell great stories in sign language.
This project is an exciting collaboration between a professional animation studio and a research & development lab at Gallaudet University, the world's only dedicated University for Deaf
and hard of hearing students.
The Baobab story was first developed in 2012, as a storybook app,
designed and based on groundbreaking research to support language acquisition and literacy development of deaf children. It continues to expand across the globe, now delivered in 11 different sign languages. Here Comes Mavo! is a spinoff of this original story. Our pink-haired adventurer has so much more stories to share. Let's go!
